Chapter Twenty-Eight

Walking steadily at a fast pace, perhaps even a Highgardian pace, Torunn made it down the mountain by late afternoon and now, here before her, was the settlement of Tonsberg. It was considerably larger than Torunn had anticipated. There were many people and much to see. There were a few large stone dwellings, far bigger than Torunn had seen in the mountain village. She also saw row upon row of smaller dwellings, mostly built of wood. She had delighted in seeing more trees again as she made her descent, for there had been few high on the mountain. Torunn reasoned that because trees were bountiful here the inhabitants built many structures from them and used the wood to fuel their fires as well. She detected the scent of firewood burning from many dwellings.

Now as she walked further into the settlement, she stood and observed several stalls in a market where local people traded their wares with those who came by sea. Brynhild had explained there were those people from this land who were explorers, adventurers, and even raiders and warmongers. She claimed some were thirsty for power and riches or to find other lands to conquer, yet she’d said the majority of the people here in this land of Norway were farmers and fishermen. Most did not live a life of excitement and were not intent on raiding and killing but were actually simple folk who lived to provide for their families.

As she made her way past the many buildings and stalls, Torunn’s eyes finally rested upon the sea and she walked toward it in haste. Somewhere upon this sea she would surely find Brenna and Asta and the thought offered solace. She smiled at the sight of the lovely blue water of the long, narrow fiord surrounded by high cliffs and mountains on either side in the distance. It was a truly beautiful sight. She inhaled the scent of the salty sea air, listened to the seagulls as they cried out their own love of the sea, and closed her eyes pretending for a moment she was in Highgard, at her beloved home standing near the Violet Sea.

It was considerably warmer here than on the mountain, and there was little snow on the ground. She longed to sit upon the ground, but it was stony. She wished to remove her boots and wade into the water, but she knew it would not be as warm as the Violet Sea, for she saw the many mountains of ice that floated in the water. She and her sisters had always referred to them as ice-castles.

Her heart ached with missing her sisters, and even the people from the village…and Brandr. They had simply parted ways after she had assisted with readying much of the moose meat and fur. He’d set off in one direction and she in the other with only an awkward hasty farewell. When she turned to look back at him she saw he looked back at her as well and his blue eyes filled with regret.
